The E-Mobility Forum 2021 was held last week, serving as a platform to highlight discussions on future electric vehicles (EVs) and their accompanying infrastructure in Singapore.

Its main objective is to foster relationships between the German Embassy and the Singaporean-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (SGC).

In March 2021, the Singapore government pledged to have 60,000 operational electric vehicles (EV) charging points across Singapore by 2030. This is further broken down into 40,000 chargers in public carparks and 20,000 in private premises such as condominiums.

This is one of the many initiatives planned in conjunction with the Singapore Green Plan 2030, a scheme that targets long-term net-zero emissions and sustainable use of energy.

These aspiring EV plans were further elaborated by Minister for Transport, Mr S Iswaran at the German-Singaporean E-Mobility Forum 2021. Mr Iswaran was Guest of Honour at the forum jointly organised by the German Embassy and the Singaporean-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (SGC).

The conference showcased electric vehicles from renowned car manufacturers Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Porsche, as well as E-bikes powered by Bosch. Singapore's main aim is to create an innovative and collaborative ecosystem with key partners to accelerate the adoption of green mobility, and to deliver a reliable and seamless experience for all EV drivers.

Targets for E-Mobility are laid out in the Green Plan 2030 by the Singapore government and will be the catalyst to enable a major shift from traditional internal combustion engines (ICEs) to more sustainable ways of driving, such as the utilisation of electric vehicles (EV).

E-Mobility is a crucial aspect in achieving UN climate goals. Keeping the average rise in temperature below 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels is vital to prevent a climate collapse as urged by scientists worldwide. This is especially important in Singapore, which at sea level, is at risk of being negatively impacted by further climate deterioration.

During the dialogue session, the goals for electrification in different transportation segments and the collaborative opportunities between German and Singaporean companies in automotive technologies were discussed, especially in the context of EVs.

German car manufacturers like Audi and Porsche are already front-runners in the race towards E-Mobility, and already offer vehicles that are environmentally friendly while continuing to provide safety, comfort and fun in driving.

Overall, this forum brought together various key players of the value chain in E-Mobility in Singapore for the first time. Sharing experiences from Germany and options for a successful journey to electrifying mobility in Singapore is an important step in getting the ball rolling between the various partners.

With the conclusion of this forum, we can expect to see more EVs on our roads in due time, alongside an increased availability of EV infrastructure.
