All-New Lexus RX Makes Its Global Debut
Japanese luxury automaker Lexus has officially unveiled the all-new RX premium crossover for 2023, promising superior driving dynamics, a diverse list of powertrain options, and an evolved design language.
First unveiled by the company in 1998, the RX nameplate has since gone on to become an award-winning household name, and this fifth-generation intends to push the boundaries even further with more advanced technologies and better refinement.
Lexus has not only lowered its centre of gravity by 15mm from the outgoing model, it has also lengthened its wheelbase by 60mm. To add more emphasis to the design, the spindle grille design language has also been reimagined. Now referred to as the spindle body, the grille element now blends seamlessly with the rest of the front fascia. The traditional door handle mechanism for opening and closing has also been replaced with an electrically controlled e-latch switch system.
Inside, the premium marque has adopted its Tazuna design concept, which supposedly promotes an intuitive and inviting cabin. From driver-focused switchgear placement to a vastly spacious interior, both driver and passenger stand to benefit from this plush new cabin. Steering wheel switches, for example, are now integrated with the head-up display, and the centre display can now be had in either 14" or 9.8" touchscreen sizes.
The 2023 RX will utilise an updated version of the GA-K platform, which can also be found on several Lexus models like the ES and NX, as well as the Harrier and RAV4 from its parent company Toyota.
A highlight of this update is a reworked rear section of the platform, which is designed with the newly-developed multi-link suspension system in mind. Various components have been improved to give the RX a smoother riding experience, while opening up more space inside.
Speaking of which, the RX will also stand to gain more luggage space. The back-door trim has been made thinner, with a loading height reduction of 30mm. All in all, cargo length is increased by 50mm, which means you can store up to four suitcases or four 9.5" golf bags.
Even the front section will benefit from changes, with the incorporation of aluminium fenders and B-pillars made out of 2 gigapascal (GPa) hot-stamped material, promising about 90 kilograms in weight reduction.
A slew of models will be offered, with electrified options available. The top-shelf RX will gain DIRECT4, a new electrification technology that precisely controls the drive force of all four wheels based on the vehicle’s ground contact load regardless of the road surface or driving conditions.
Apart from the existing F SPORT line, the newly available F SPORT Performance package will include aluminium monoblock opposed six-piston brake calipers up front, Dynamic Rear Steering (DRS) for the rear, 21" aluminium wheels, and exclusive exterior design items.
The top-shelf RX will also gain DIRECT4, a new electrification technology that precisely controls the drive force of all four wheels based on the vehicle’s ground contact load regardless of the road surface or driving conditions.
On the safety front, the RX will be equipped with Lexus Safety System +. This suite of safety assists will include Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (with all-speed following function) and Advanced Park, the latter of which can support back-up/forward-facing/parallel parking and even forward/back-up exit.
