Bad news teachers—from 1 August 2018, you’ll be required to pay for parking in schools.
It’s official. Teachers from all national primary and secondary schools, as well junior colleges, will be required to pay for parking in school premises from 1 August 2018.
The news was confirmed after a review by the government. In fact, the Straits Times reports that several teachers have already been briefed by their schools on the newly implemented parking fees.
It was reported that unsheltered season parking will cost S$75 per month during school terms and S$15 per month during school holidays. For sheltered lots, teachers will have to pay S$100 monthly during school terms and S$20 monthly for school holidays.
For teachers who ride motorcycles, they’ll be charged a monthly fee of $13 for unsheltered lots and $14 for sheltered parking. For school holidays, their fees will be lowered to $2 and $3 respectively.
Other than teachers and faculty members, canteen stall operators, coaches and instructors will also be affected. School visitors such as parents and volunteers, however, will not be affected.
Although school parking fees are cheaper than HDB parking, this decision was not well-received by the online community. Most netizens argue that school teachers are currently “underpaid” and “overworked”, and should enjoy free parking because of their long working hours.
Others have claimed that parking charges should also be implemented to regulars who drive and park in army camps.
