The New Italian Track Special: Maserati Unveils The Project24
Maserati has unveiled their new MC20-based track special Project24, with only 62 units set to be produced.
The Project24 is meant solely for the race track (it's not road legal) and Maserati has no plans to homologate it for road usage. Using the same engine as the MC20, which is Maserati's new twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6, but in the Project24 it produces 740 horsepower, courtesy of larger turbochargers.
Power is sent to the rear wheels only via a six-speed sequential gearbox, and the rear axle is also fitted with a mechanical limited-slip differential. The Project24 runs centre locking 18-inch forged aluminium wheels which are shod in slick tyres for maximum grip on the track.
It also receives new adjustable dampers and double wishbone suspension, FIA-approved safety features like a roll cage, racing harness and a race-spec fuel tank, plus carbon-ceramic brakes which are now fitted as standard equipment. The bodywork is completely carbon fibre, with adjustable front and rear wings, allowing Project24 to be aerodynamically set up to suit various tracks as required.
The Project24 was put on a diet in order to reduce its weight to something more conducive for track work. Maserati doesn't provide exact figures, but they do state that the Project24 "has a dry weight of less than 1250kg". With fluids and fuel, it would be safe to assume a wet weight of slightly over 1300kg, which is still light by modern standards.
Owners of the Project24 will get to enjoy a range of exclusive services from Maserati, such as track day experiences and support for their cars. If this is the way Maserati is showing its clients that it is the dawn of a new era for the company, this doesn't seem like a bad start at all.
