The Great Malaysia Road Trip: Preparation to Go Up North!
What does it take to pull off a successful road trip?
For some, a decently-powered car alone would do the trick. But as folks who spend most of our time on the roads, we know that there's more to it than just having raw power, and that lots of careful preparation is involved to ensure a smooth, fuss-free journey.
Which is exactly what we did for our recent Great Malaysia Road Trip, thanks to our title sponsor DirectAsia and supporting sponsor YHI Singapore.
With our two eager hosts (Motorist mBassador winners Kai Ling and Chanel) leading the way, the 7D6N journey across Malaysia would take them through the country's winding roads and vast expressway network. And along the way, they'll stop by various tourist attractions along the way that are guaranteed to be fun for the whole family!
Preparation is Key
Before crossing the border, we first paid a visit to YHI's showroom and workshop at 2 Pandan Rd to get our car sorted out. As the trip would see our hosts cover hundreds of kilometers of open road, our friends at YHI were kind enough to identify the right tyres for the job.
YHI Singapore is a leading distributor of automotive products such as tyres, rims, automotive batteries, and lubricant oils.
Out went the worn set of rubber and in went a fresh set of Yokohama Advans, with both Kai Ling and Chanel having a go at replacing the wheelsets. YHI had recommended using their newly-introduced Advan Fleva V701 tyres.
Designed for high-performance driving, they offer immense grip thanks to wide sword grooves on the edges. The lightning-shaped straight grooves on the inner side also aid in traction on tarmac, with the added benefit of increased hydroplaning resistance. Perfect for the erratic weather that we were about to face, then!
Apart from the Advan Fleva V701, the Advan line also carries other Advan Sport V107 for high performance cars and Advan dB V552 for luxury saloons. YHI also carries other Yokohama models, including their fuel efficiency-oriented BluEarth line of tyres, and the rugged SUV-specific Geolandar ones that we featured last year. No matter what car you’re driving, Yokohama and YHI have you covered.
Tyres & Wheels for Every Occasion
Our hosts also picked out a set of striking-looking double five-spoke alloy wheels to go along with the Fleva tyres, also from YHI's comprehensive list of available wheels. The distributor carries lineups from industry giants like OZ Racing, Enkei, and Konig, many of whom have had extensive experience in the world of motorsports.
These international brands are not only of high quality, but also provide various stylings and colours to suit different cars and occasions.
OZ Racing, for example, provides rally-style lightweight alloys that were used by the Citroën Total World Rally Team during their heydays, while Enkei has had a hand in equipping wheels for Formula One cars. Konig's well-known in the professional drifting scene too, with a massive following in North America.
So if you're considering finding the right set of wheels for your beloved ride, whether it's a high-end Audi or a humble Volkswagen, YHI's got you covered.
And Off We Go!
With the wheelsets secured and tightened, our car's finally ready to make the Malaysia trip. We would like to thank our partners from DirectAsia and YHI Singapore for the continued support, and getting this special event up and running.
Stay tuned for our multi-part coverage of the exciting journey, as well as our video segment here!
