Singapore’s leading car-sharing platform GetGo has entered into a strategic partnership with major bus/rail operator SBS Transit to jointly promote car-sharing as a mobility option for first/last-mile connectivity.

Under this new collaboration, GetGo's car-sharing vehicles will be made available within 500 metres of all the 50 MRT stations on the North East Line and Downtown Line, as well as SBS Transit-managed bus interchanges.

Currently, over 400 GetGo cars, out of more than 3,000 vehicles in the fleet, are within accessible locations near SBS train stations and bus interchanges. A dedicated website helps commuters to find GetGo cars near them in the SBS Transit network. They can also use the GetGo app to get the same real-time information and plan their journey accordingly. New users will get S$15 off when they try this additional “car-lite” option.

However, with GetGo being a “point A to A” car-sharing service (the rental vehicle must be returned to the same collection point) which is charged by usage duration and mileage, it is probably not viable as an alternative to a taxi/PHV ride. Instead, it could work as another transport option for commuters who might, for example, run multiple errands around a public transport node which would be faster and easier with a shared car.

Mr Toh Ting Feng, CEO of GetGo, said: “We will work together with SBS to adapt our services to better fit the evolving needs of our users and commuters.”

Mr Jeffrey Sim, Group CEO of SBS Transit, said: “We are delighted to join forces with GetGo, making our buses and trains more accessible, inclusive, and convenient for our commuters.”

Both companies did not disclose whether they will be sharing user data to track the take-up and determine which journeys are actual first/last-mile trips and not incidental trips which involve an SBS Transit bus/train and a GetGo car.
