In a first for the local motor trade, parallel importer Vincar has been appointed as the official distributor for a car brand in Singapore, representing China’s state-owned GAC Aion which specialises in electric cars.

The first Aion model to go on sale here is the Y Plus, a five-seater crossover focused on space and comfort.

The newcomer’s family-friendly features include front seats which recline to form a pair of individual loungers with the rear seats, a central console ready for phones, cups and other items; comfortable climate control including rear air vents and a built-in air purifier, various USB ports, doors which open to almost 90 degrees for easier cabin access, and generous rear legroom with a flat and wide floorboard.

The onboard infotainment is controlled via a 14.6-inch touchscreen, which is designed to support online games and digital karaoke in its home market. The system’s language capability includes English, Chinese and Malay.

The Y Plus is also equipped with a vehicle-to-load port to charge popular gadgets such as smartphones, laptops and personal mobility devices. There is also a wireless charger integrated with the phone tray of the dashboard console.

Power for the Y Plus comes from Aion’s in-house “magazine” battery pack, with a capacity of 63.2 kWh and a combined range of up to 430 kilometres (WLTP). The electric motor is rated at 100kW (134bhp), which qualifies the car for COE Category A.

Currently, GAC’s Aion division is only the second Chinese EV company after market behemoth BYD to design and build its own batteries. Incidentally, the top variant of Aion’s flagship model, LX Plus SUV, has a massive 144.4 kWh battery and a claimed, world-best range of over 1,000 kilometres.

The Y Plus is less extreme in its electrical specifications, but its styling is pretty dramatic for a family BEV. Aion calls the design concept Sky City, which encompasses Angel Wing headlights, Sky Light rear light bar, powered door handles which lie flush with the doors when not in use, and funky 17-inch alloy wheels. The seven body colours include Lucky Gold and Youthful Green. There are five interior colour schemes available.

Vincar’s launch price for the Aion Y Plus starts from $145,888 including Cat A COE and after the relevant VES and EEAI rebates.

Vincent Tan, managing director of V1NCAR EV (second from right in the photo above), said: “We are proud to be chosen by state-owned automotive giant GAC Group to represent GAC Aion battery electric vehicles in Singapore. We will offer Aion customers the best customer experience and aftersales care. GAC Aion will become a household name in Singapore.”
