Fellow Motorist: Sabrina Sng, managing director; Polestar Singapore and Lotus Singapore & Thailand

Ms Sng, 46, started her almost 20-year automotive career as a Volvo marketer and worked her way up to Wearnes management. We chat with the Singaporean lady at Polestar’s 45 Leng Kee Road showroom.

How long have you been a motorist in Singapore?

I’ve had a driving licence since 2000, so I’ve been driving for 24 years. I passed the test on my second attempt, it was at Bukit Batok Driving Centre. 

Last time only had manual-transmission test. It was really strenuous doing the short course and even while I was learning to drive, because I had an old knee injury at the time. 

Do you remember your first car?

I remember my first company car, which was in 2007. It was a silver Volvo V50.

Tell us about your current ride.

Also a company car. It’s a Polestar 2, Long Range Dual Motor, colour Snow. I’ve been driving it for about six months.

What do you like about motoring in Singapore?

Most places are easy to get to. There’s a lot of greenery around. What I really like, actually, our roads are so well lit and nicely paved. And you can drive to anywhere, you can access anywhere easily in a car.

What do you dislike about motoring in Singapore?

Too many cars. My pet peeve is too many traffic lights, that’s why I also try to take roads with fewer traffic stops. I also dislike roadworks. 

What’s the best part about your current role in Polestar?

Having the challenge of building a brand and business from scratch. Polestar is a new brand globally, it was introduced to Singapore in 2021. 

What’s your hope for electric vehicles in Singapore?

I think there’ll be more widespread adoption of EVs in Singapore. The challenge now is that many people are still unfamiliar with the basics of EVs, such as charging, driving, usage and benefits. Then there are the myths about EV safety such as fire hazard, whether you can drive through water, whether you can charge an EV in the rain. 

If you don’t bother to find out, you might have preconceived notions or unfounded concerns which deter you from considering EVs. 

In the case of Polestar, we have the dual challenge of new brand and new technology. Because it’s new tech and the public is not familiar with driving and owning an EV, we also have to educate the driving public about new technology. After all, we’re one of the few premium brands which are 100% EV.
