Johor to implement QR codes for immigration clearance at land checkpoints with Singapore from June 2024
The Malaysian government will roll out a QR code immigration system at its land checkpoints with Singapore later this year in a bid to reduce crossing times and congestion.
The system is slated to be implemented in phases from June and is expected to reduce immigration clearance time by half for the 400,000 travellers that pass through the checkpoints daily.
According to a report by the New Straits Times (NST), this system will be implemented at both land checkpoints in Johor, servicing both the Woodlands and Tuas side border crossings.
The QR code immigration system is expected to function similarly to Singapore’s own QR code immigration clearance system which was put into action on 19 March. It will involve travellers using a unique QR code instead of their passports at immigration.
The trial run for this system, according to NST, will involve immigration officers boarding some of the 400 to 500 factory buses that cross the Johor-Singapore border daily and transport workers to factories and industrial areas and scanning the QR codes of those onboard instead of processing their passports manually.
In an interview with NST, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said,”If the QR clearance system proves to be effective in alleviating congestion at our land checkpoints, it should be implemented without delay.”
