Do you need a new VEP to drive from Singapore to Malaysia?
Planning a road trip from Singapore to Malaysia? If you're behind the wheel of a Singapore-registered vehicle, you'll need to be familiar with the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) requirements.
So, do you need a new VEP for your trip? The answer depends on a few factors:
When was your last VEP application? VEPs come in two flavors: short-term (valid for 1-90 days) and long-term (valid for 5 years). If you haven't applied for a VEP before, or your existing VEP has expired, then yes, you'll need to submit a new application.
Have you ever had a VEP and RFID tag installed? Previously, VEPs came with an RFID tag that streamlined toll payments in Malaysia. However, due to technical issues, the RFID tag rollout has been put on hold.
Here's a breakdown of the current situation:
- No VEP or RFID tag: Apply for a new VEP online through the official Malaysian VEP website. While the RFID tag program is paused, you can still enter Malaysia from singapore using the VEP confirmation email slip or a Touch 'n Go card for toll payments.
- Temporary Exemption for RFID Tag: There have been past discussions about a VEP-RFID tag linked to a Touch 'n Go eWallet for toll payments. However, as of June 2024, this implementation is on hold.
- Current VEP Process: For now, you can apply for a VEP online and receive a confirmation slip via email. This slip, along with a valid Touch 'n Go card, is sufficient for entry into Malaysia from Singapore.
Driving into Malaysia from Singapore without a VEP after October 1st, 2024, could result in:
- Denied entry
- Fines up to RM2,000 (approx. S$425)
- Up to 6 months imprisonment
You can apply for your VEP well in advance, especially if you anticipate traveling to Malaysia from Singapore frequently. This will ensure a smooth and hassle-free border crossing.
Remember: Always check for the latest updates and regulations regarding the VEP system before your trip. Enjoy your road trip!
