Fellow Motorist: Sean Ng, director, E-Megavan
Mr Ng, 32, talks about his convertible and how he tries to convert commercial fleet owners from internal combustion to electric power.
How long have you been a motorist in Singapore?
Since 2013. I got my licence in 2012, two times to pass the test.
What do you like about motoring in Singapore?
I drive because of my trade, because I do sales. Driving saves me time, so I can go for more sales appointments. I like night drives, because when I was younger, in my 20s, I would drive out to meet my friends for supper. Going out at night is much more convenient with a car. Also, Singapore road conditions are good compared to other countries.
What do you dislike about motoring in Singapore?
The traffic jams during peak hours and all the traffic lights.
Remember your first car?
If I’m not wrong, it was a Hyundai Getz in 2013. My most memorable past car was an F10 BMW 5 Series.
Tell us about your current ride.
I got my BMW 640i cabriolet last year. Once in my lifetime I should have a convertible and this is it! But to be honest, it’s a bit troublesome when ferrying family and clients, even though it’s a very good drive.
I just resprayed the whole vehicle, from metallic black to satin black. I also redid almost the whole interior, which is now all wrapped in maroon leather, and there’s a crystal gearknob too. I did some modifications as well, for performance and aesthetics.
What do you find most satisfying about your work?
Basically, we set up this company in line with the Government’s national vision to go green for sustainablity. Moving forward, it’s going to be mostly electric vehicles. I also deal with industrial real estate. Most of my property clients are business owners, and one of their commercial needs is transport. Therefore, we’re like a one-stop solution.
What do you find most challenging about your work?
Most customers and consumers are not into electric yet, due to the lack of knowledge and infrastructure. I moved into electric commercial vehicles (CVs) when Singapore started its electric transition and people had absolutely no confidence in EVs.
One of my breakthroughs was with this MNC which does warehousing solutions, supply chain and logistics. I changed quite a number of their fleet vehicles to electric and also did the training for their drivers. The vans had an exterior wrap which created more exposure for electric CVs on the road.
What's your hope for electric vehicles in Singapore's commercial sector and E-Megavan's role in it?
I would like to encourage more business owners to give EVs a chance and try them out. They might have a lot of concerns about EVs, but we know how to solve them. This will be a first-mover advantage for them, in addition to making their company fleets more environmentally-friendly and more cost-efficient.
Electric commercial vehicles are the next era, like from Nokia phones to today’s smartphones.
