Citroen’s e-C4 X is a funky fastback with a focus on comfort in everyday driving. It still retains some of the French flair we’ve come to expect, know, and love/hate from the brand.

Bonjour mesdames et messieurs, this is the new Citroen e-C4 X. I know that’s a lot of letters and numbers to keep track of, especially in today’s world of car models with lots of letters and numbers but it’s actually quite simple. The ‘X’ denotes that this is the sedan version of the e-C4 SUV and the ‘e’ stands for electric. C4 is the model name and also a type of explosive but I think I’m straying from the point here.

Citroen calls the e-C4 X a sedan but it’s really somewhere in between a sedan and an SUV as the car is still pretty lifted. The X and non-X e-C4s are both the same height and width but the X is longer by 245mm. What’s stranger is that both cars are also sloped-roof coupe-style cars with a very similar front and back end design.

That’s not to say that it’s a bad thing, the e-C4 X is stylish thing with smooth lines and an inoffensive appearance. The rounded front end hosts Citroen’s signature styling and there’s no mistaking it for anything else.

In my opinion, the e-C4 X’s best angle is from its side. From here you can fully appreciate the car’s body lines and sleek shape. While the lifted fastback look does have a certain vibe, I would much rather have preferred this to be lowered instead to give it that extra svelteness.

The main differences between the X and non-X e-C4 though is its powertrain. The e-C4 X gets a larger battery with more range and more output. The 54kWh battery pack and single-electric motor is good for 134hp and 270Nm of torque sent to the front wheels. A 10-second 0-100km/h time and 150km/h top speed is far from record-breaking but for a Category A COE city car it’s sufficient enough.

The range is decent too for a 54kWh battery with a claimed range of 436km on a full charge. I only managed to average about 18kWh/100km which equates to about 300km on a full charge. Granted, my consumption figure was marred by extensive amounts of idling and the e-C4 X should be able to achieve much better range figures without any effort.

On the plus side, the e-C4 X comes with some games you can play to keep you entertained while charging like Hangman. You won’t have to play the games for too long though because the e-C4 X is capable of 100kW DC fast charging and can juice itself up from 20%-80% in just 30 minutes when hooked up to a fast charger.

If you want to take a quick nap while your car charges, you can do so with ease thanks to the super comfy seats. They’re manually adjustable but have loads of padding to keep your bum and back supported at all times.

The biggest contributer to the e-C4 X’s comfort though is Citroen’s trick suspension with Progressive Hydraulic Cushions. It’s no hydropneumatic suspension but it’s a pretty good shout nonetheless. The ride is super cushy and it just soaks up all the bumps in the road with ease. Every drive in the e-C4 X is a relaxing affair as you glide silently down the road with the ultra-light steering making manoeuvring around town a doddle.

There’s also adaptive cruise control for when you’d like the car to take over the tedium of driving on a highway or in a traffic jam. It’s effective and a welcome feature on a car at this price point and not the only premium feature the e-C4 X has either.

The e-C4 X comes standard with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as a digital dash with a heads up display. There’s also wireless charging and dual zone climate control which is adjusted with physical buttons and knobs! Rejoice!

It’s a good thing there are proper buttons for the crucial car functions too because the infotainment system can be a little finicky to use. There’s no back button so if you make a mistake while tapping through the menus, you can’t just go back one screen, you have to press the Home button and start all over again. It’s also not the most responsive screen on the market.

Those are just some of the minor niggles in an otherwise very impressive product. The Citroen e-C4 X provides brilliant value for the customer with its wide range of features and equipment and fantastic comfort while driving. If you’re from an eco-conscious family that wants a little French whimsy in their life, then voila! Your search may be over.
