HMGICS (Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Centre Singapore) is progressing from “permanent resident” to “Singapore citizen”, with a series of CSR initiatives which involve the high-tech Jurong factory and the IONIQ 5 electric cars it assembles.

The President’s Challenge aims to help the less fortunate in Singapore by raising funds and offering other forms of support. HMGICS will contribute to this year’s efforts by donating all proceeds from private tours of the facility at 2 Bulim Avenue and offering educational opportunities to selected beneficiary organisations.

The “car factory academy” roadmap will include specialised learning journeys for students from MINDS (intellectual disability) and Rainbow Centre (special educational needs such as autism), plus the open option for all schools in the country to arrange field trips to HMGICS.

In addition, HMGICS will provide tailored three-day work experiences for schoolkids from low-income families in Boon Lay and from three educational institutions in the western part of the island (Boon Lay Secondary School, School of Science and Technology, and River Valley High School).

HMGICS internships with a tenure of three to six months will also be offered to Temasek Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Nanyang Polytechnic, Nanyang Technological University, National University of Singapore, Singapore Institute of Technology, and Singapore University of Technology and Design. The programme is inclusive, so students with physical disabilities are able to apply for corporate internships with HMGICS.

It’s not all science and tech, though, with HMGICS also supporting NUS, NTU and LASALLE College of the Arts students in their passion projects. LASALLE students can also practise their creativity by producing branding/promotional videos for HMGICS and the IONIQ cars it makes here.

Two made-in-Singapore IONIQ 5s will be given to Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) and Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), with the NP vehicle enhancing the classroom teaching curriculum and the SIT vehicle incorporated into coursework on electric-vehicle systems and infrastructure.

Other than enriching young minds, the newly-launched HMGICS CSR also plays its part to end food insecurity in Singapore, by donating excess fresh vegetables such as lettuce and kale from the factory’s integral Smart Farm (robotics-driven vertical hydroponics) to communities in need. This will be done through a tie-up with The Food Bank Singapore.

Jack Lim, group director of Philanthropy Group, National Council of Social Service (NCSS), said: “Our partnership with HMGICS has evolved into a multi-year collaboration, extending beyond financial contributions to include sharing of their corporate resource and technological expertise. These are invaluable contributions leveraging their state-of-the-art research and development that will benefit our youths from disadvantaged backgrounds and those with disabilities.”

Dr Hyun Sung Park, CEO of HMGICS, said: “The spirit of progress onwards for a better future is engraved in Hyundai Motor's DNA. We believe in engaging in efforts and partnerships that support communities in Singapore, and this underscores all our work in developing sustainable future mobility innovations. HMGICS has achieved significant milestones in collaboration with Singapore since its inception. To continue this path, we are dedicated to helping local youth and communities grow together through our CSR initiatives, empowering and uplifting them to create a brighter future for all. This is our contribution to supporting Singapore’s society, giving back to communities and contributing to local talent and the economy.”
