Malaysian travellers can use QR codes instead of passports at the land checkpoints with Singapore from next year
Malaysian travellers will soon be able to use a QR code instead of their passports to cross between Singapore and Johor, with long-term plans in place to expand the system to Singaporeans.
Following a successful trial run earlier this year, Malaysian citizens on Malaysian-registered vehicles will soon be able to use QR codes instead of their passports for immigration clearance at the land checkpoints with Singapore.
While this development only applies to Malaysian citizens for now, there are long-term plans to expand the use of the QR codes to foreigners, similar to how foreigners are able to use the existing autogates.
The QR code clearance trial found that participants cleared immigration during peak hours significantly faster than before.
Malaysian Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail reported that with the QR codes, over 750 motorcyclists are able to clear immigration in an hour, up from 500 to 600 previously. Bus users also reported waiting times during peak hours cut from 120 minutes to just 15 minutes.
The QR code clearance system will be rolled out in phases next year once details of its execution are finalised. It will first be available to motorcyclists and bus passengers, before being expanded to other modes of transport.
