mReview: BYD M6 7-Seater – Electric Value
The BYD M6 is a no-nonsense, value-for-money, all-electric family MPV with one eye on the future.
The all-new BYD M6 is the latest Chinese EV to land on our shores, and even though this is just a family-friendly MPV, it might be one of the most anticipated new cars by our local consumers.
There’s no denying that Singaporeans love an MPV, I should know because my own family has had three. Look at any road for even a second and there’s sure to be at least one MPV in sight too, plying our roads in the hands of both private owners and private-hire drivers.
So when the newest darling of Singapore, BYD, announced that they’d be bringing in an all-new 7-seater MPV and in the more budget-friendly COE Category A no less, consumers islandwide had their interests piqued.
At first glance, the M6 might just look like a 7-seater version of the e6, BYD’s 5-seater, all-electric MPV. However, I’ve been assured that they are entirely different cars which is a good thing, as the e6 wasn’t exactly stellar.
The M6 has improved upon the e6 in every metric: better looks, better efficiency, better equipment, more power, faster charging, and of course, two more seats. The M6 now features a redesigned front and rear to make it look much more modern and visually appealing than the e6.
There’s also a new motor on the front axle which makes 100kW (134hp, 40hp more than the e6) and 250Nm of torque (70Nm more than the e6). Battery size is the same at 71.8kWh but efficiency and charging speeds have been significantly improved, the M6 will do 440km on a full charge and can recharge at a DC fast charger at up to 115kW.
The added oomph makes the M6 a much more pleasant car to drive than the e6 ever was. Even though the M6 is a Cat A car, the instant get-up-and-go nature of EVs give it a little spring in its step. It’s no sports car for sure but methinks the average family man or PHV-uncle will still be rather satisfied with this much poke.
They will also appreciate the full suite of driver assistance and safety systems. I remember when the original e6 had “seatbelt reminders” touted as one of their safety features because there was nothing else to list down. The new M6, however, is a far cry from those early days.
Included as standard on the M6 are adaptive cruise control with steering assist, lane keep assist, rear cross traffic alerts, blind spot monitoring, a 360˙ camera, and more. Interior quality and equipment have also been vastly improved.
Along with ample space for seven, there’s also a panoramic glass roof, vegan leather upholstery, lots of charging ports, and even ventilated front seats. There’s also Apple CarPlay and Android Auto that can be accessed through BYD’s signature 12.8-inch rotating display.
The best part? BYD has managed to fit all of these new features to the M6 for an absolute steal, the M6 is both the cheapest MPV and cheapest EV you can get from an authorised distributor. With Singapore continuing her march towards cleaner energy vehicles and for the amount of car you get for the price, I expect to see many more M6s joining our MPV population.
