Motormouth: The scariest lady drivers try to drive like aggressive men
Some women seem to believe that they will be respected on the roads if they adopt the worst of male driving habits.
[Story by guest columnist J.Q Qiu]
These include not indicating at all, speeding up to cut off another motorist who is trying to filter in, straddling two lanes, and driving way too fast on certain roads.
In my experience, four out of five drivers who actually speed up to cut me off when I indicate have been female drivers, who were usually behind the helms of cars such as compact crossovers, massive SUVs, and even MPVs with kids on board.
I don't doubt the ability of lady drivers to control their vehicles, nor do I plan on drudging up all manner of weird accidents that demonstrate the ineptitude of the fairer sex behind the wheel.
Speaking of which, a female friend of mine recently embarked on a refresher's course for qualified drivers due to a long period of inactivity.
Rather than concentrate on how she would interact with other road users in a busy road environment, she was more concerned with the steering wheel, pedals and parking poles.
Of course, car control is an important aspect of motoring, but more crucial is the driver's ability to flow through traffic with maximum efficacy and minimal disruption to other motorists' traffic flows.
Female drivers seem to think it is only by driving like road-raging men that they will be respected on the roads, and too many times they equate this aggressiveness with “good” driving.
Too often we hear of accidents occurring because female drivers refused to give way or because of evasive manoeuvres taken by male motorists to avoid a wayward woman driver!
This chip on their shoulder probably stems from the fact that they don't want to be “taken advantage of”, as some may have been throughout their lives. Therefore, every incursion into their road lane is practically a dollop of spit in their face as you rob a woman of her pride.
But remember, ladies and gentlemen - one's right of way does not always mean it's the right way.
