Speeding offences will carry harsher penalties from 2026, says Minister K. Shanmugam
Harsher penalties for speeding offences will be put in place from 1 January 2026, announced Minister K. Shanmugam.
At the inaugural Road Safety Day event on 15 February, Minister for Law and Home Affairs, Mr K. Shanmugam announced that starting 1 January 2026, demerit points and composition fines for speeding offences will be increased.
This comes after 2024 saw 192,000 speeding violations detected, the highest in the last decade. There were also nearly 7,200 accidents with 142 fatalities as well as 46 speed-related fatal incidents, an increase of almost 44%.
Mr Shanmugam said that although the Traffic Police have increased enforcement, such as by activating the speed enforcement function in red-light cameras, more still needs to be done to change or shape behaviour.
The speed enforcement function in red-light cameras has been progressively activated since 1 April 2024, after a spike in speeding-related fatal accidents.
More details on the increased penalties for speeding offences are yet to be announced by the Traffic Police. Motorists caught speeding in 2025 will be dealt the existing penalties and offenders will be reminded that there will be harsher penalties in place from January 2026 onwards.
