Resilience Budget 2020: Taxi and Private Hire Drivers to Receive S$1,000 a Month for 9 Months

As part of the Resilience Budget 2020, taxi and private hire drivers will receive S$1,000 a month for 9 months to help them through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Announced earlier today by Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat as part of the Resilience Budget to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, the aforementioned payout will be part of the Self-Employed Person Income Relief Scheme (SIRS).

Under SIRS, all eligible self-employed persons will receive S$1,000 a month for 9 months. Those eligible for this scheme includes freelancers such as taxi drivers, private hire drivers, real-estate agents, media and art freelancers, and other self-employed personnel.

A total of $1.2 billion will be set aside for this scheme, which also includes a $95 million Extend and Enhance Point-to-Point Support Package.

In addition, private bus owners will also receive a one-year road tax rebate and 6-month waiver for their parking charges.

Taxi and private hire drivers who are looking to take up SkillsFuture courses or training programmes will also be eligible for a training allowance of $7.50 per hour. This will be increased to $10 per hour starting from 1 May 2020, which will be extended until December 2020.
