BYD e6 Electric 2021 - A Glimpse Into The EV Future
The all-new BYD e6 Electric is an exciting new EV, integrating modern design cues into a sleek and practical package.
BYD has launched the all-new e6 Electric in Singapore. The new car promises greater comfort and better battery range, among a host of other benefits.
The styling has also been completely overhauled; the dull and boxy look of the old model has been replaced with a sleek new design, giving the new car a clean and futuristic look.
A new fresh and modern look
The all-new e6’s body lines are much more elegant, with an MPV-like body style that offers both style and practicality.
The car is definitely a head-turner. Its innovative front grille is accompanied by stylish new LED Daytime Running Lights. The smooth design cues extend all the way to the rear, with a sloping roofline providing a sportier look.
The car also comes in a rather fetching two-tone blue and black paint job that is a welcoming sight amongst the monotonous greys and blacks other manufacturers are launching their cars with.
A symphony of spaciousness and practicality
If you thought the exterior looked good, the interior looks way better. The refreshed look gives this car a huge improvement in styling over the previous model.
Additionally, the interior carries over the copious amounts of real estate from the previous model, with a class-leading 580-litres of boot space. There is also more than enough leg and headroom for everyone to be comfortable.
A new rotatable 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system is now front and centre on the dashboard. Following the trend of modern cars having vehicle functions in the infotainment system, you are able to adjust climate control settings, radio presets, and many other functions through the touchscreen.
The Android-based system is responsive and polished, with a blue user interface menu matching the aesthetics of the car. By connecting via WiFi, you will enjoy the convenience of Google Maps for all your navigational needs.
A responsive and pleasant drive
The all-new e6 is powered by BYD’s Blade Battery with 60kW DC charging and a 40kW AC onboard charger. The battery has a capacity of 71.7kWh and outputs 71kW (91hp) of power and 180Nm of torque.
With BYD optimising its usage of space in its battery pack, this has resulted in overall weight savings of 490kg over a conventional lithium iron phosphate block battery. With less weight, it grants the e6 more range, something that is incredibly important in an EV.
Thanks to BYD’s new Blade Battery powering the car and a healthy weight loss diet, the all-new e6 has a claimed range of 522km WLTC (City) and 415km (Combined), which is the longest range of any EV vehicle currently available for sale in Singapore.
In testing, we averaged 17.1kWh/100km. That equates to an expected range of 419.2km, which is impressive. This also dismissed any form of range anxiety we had when driving around in the e6.
While it may not be the quickest car off the line, the car definitely excels in terms of comfort and smoothness. The updated 6-way adjustable leather seat cradles you nicely and the overall ride is great, thanks to the car’s suspension that irons out most bumps on the road. Since all of its weight is packed down low, it handles well too.
The car emits a gentle hum as you whoosh along in eco-friendly comfort. It might be unusual at first, but you'll quickly get used to it. This is especially useful when you reach home late at night, ensuring that you do not disturb your neighbours.
The future electric family MPV dream
When it does come time to recharge, it’s hardly a complicated affair. Apps like PlugShare is available to find all the various chargers and their prices. The three main players in the charging network now are Shell, SP Group, and BlueSG, with Caltex to begin installing chargers as well.
The all-new e6 has the ability to be charged by either DC or AC sources, with charging from 0-100% taking 1.5h on DC charging and 1.8h on AC charging.
Cost-wise, it varies between charging providers much like petrol stations but on average, you would be able to get a full charge for less than S$16.
While the car is being topped off, you can sit in the car and do some work while you wait or watch a video on the tablet that is on the centre console.
Alternatively, if you were to charge in a shopping mall carpark, you’d be able to go in and have dinner while your car ‘refuels’.
The switch to electric motoring was hardly the paradigm shift that some make it out to be. With the government committing to an electrified future, we can expect to see more electric offerings coming out from the various manufacturers in the near future, with BYD themselves looking to bring in more from their EV range.
With a modest price of S$115,388 (as of 25 May 2021), the all-new e6 offers great value alongside reliability, practicality and comfort all in one vehicle.
Considering your first foray into the EV scene? The e6 could very well be the car for you.
